Branding, app design and website creation for new social media platform Rantable

Rantable is a mobile app which allows you to vent your frustration out loud to the world via social media. Rantable additionally allows users to rate and comment on the posted rants! That chap on the bus who always listens to his happy hardcore music way too loud and smells of cat wee... Well now you can post to the world direct from your phone via Rantable to shame him for his bad behaviour!

Andy at Rantable came to jonwallacedesign with a requirement for a brand (logo, colours, fonts and global styling), website and mobile app designs/UI (for iOS and Android) which would form the basis of the built app as created by a development team.

The first job was to work on the Rantable brand - we wanted this to appear a little 'shouty' in style, with an obvious visual connection to the mechanism of posting a comment in social media. One main use of the logo would be as the app icon on mobile screens, so the square icon design requirement drove the brand design phase somewhat - for that reason, we decided to abbreviate the Rantable word to a single R, and made the negative white space of the R become a speech bubble with an expletive icon to represent a rant! Alongside the square icon element, we created the word element of the logo in a slightly comical / 'shouty' font to sit with the app tagline. The colours used in the brand reflect those of the 2 largest social media companies and help make a subtle connection with them, re-enforcing the social media status format of the Rantable app.

The 2nd phase of the project was to first design the iOS app UI layouts for iPhone4/5 and iPad - The first step was to plan what content needed to sit onto the various different screens which would make up the app, visualising how a user would post a rant, comment on a rant, rate a rant, login etc etc. With the flow and information architecture agreed - we set about taking the new Rantable branding, colours and fonts and making up the mobile UI screens that form the full user experience within the app. Following the creation of the app UI for iOS - we then also created a wide range of Android app UIs for various different sized devices with the design work adapted so that it would behave responsively to scale to adapt devices in between the 'designed' UI sizes. The app UI look and feel follows on from the branding, creating a compelling and slightly 'shouty' style with content slotting in nicely to the large open white spaces throughout the app screens. With all the app UI screens designed - these were then provided to the development team so they could build out the apps on iOS and Android ready to be deployed in the app and play stores.

The final phase of the project was to create the website which would market the Rantable app and encourage folk to download the app and start using it. Again, the first stage was to wireframe the website, outlining the key pages of content and how we would go about structuring the content of the website to create a compelling, succinct and sexy looking layout. With the information architecture complete - we added the Rantable branding to the layouts to create a gorgeous responsive website, pulling key visual elements from the brand and app UI into the website for synergy of messaging. Andy had a lovely promotional video created which features heavily on the homepage alongside an animated HERO carousel which promotes the key features and functions of the Rantable app.

What I love about Jon is his ability to take on-board our basic ideas and turn them into beautiful digital designs. On many occasions we’ve given Jon a simple or vague brief and in no time at all he is producing designs that blow us away. I have no doubt that anybody that works with Jon will be very pleased with his high quality of work, speed of turnaround and always going the extra mile that gets the positive reaction we’re always looking for.
